The colorful sign to make sure you know you really are in Roatan!

How to Find Food That is Cheap AND Tastes good on Roatan

So you too decided to go to Roatan, Honduras? Let’s start by being up front. This isn’t our favorite travel spot that we’ve found. In fact, it’s our least favorite in Honduras! And yet, we still recommend adding Roatan to your Honduras Itinerary. Is is super budget friendly? Nope. Are there lots of opportunities for local experiences? Not so much. Are there lots of majority of visitors Americans ( many retirees actually) and Canadians? Yeah. But despite all that, we ended up spending a week on this Bay Island and managed to find some of the more affordable places to eat that we want to share with you!

Best Places to eat in Roatan Honduras on a Budget

  1. Yahongreh?
    • Read the name out loud and you’ll get the gist! Hands down this is our top recommendation for where to eat in Roatan on a budget, This place is perfect for breakfast or lunch ( it closes at 2) and is open 6 days a week ( no Mondays). You should come for the national Honduran dish ( the baleada), but there are also tons of other options to choose from including Western amenities like yogurt bowls and pancakes as well as typical Honduran breakfasts ( eggs, beans, avocado, toast, plantains).
    • They also make the best fruit smoothies. A yogurt bowls or pancakes runs about $3.50 and baleadas are about $1.50 depending on what you want to stuff inside. Bonus, this place is right across from Halfmoon Bay Beach ( the main beach in West End) so it is easy to take your food to go and enjoy a beach picnic.
  2. Seawiches
    • If you’re a veg head like us, then this spot will be a welcome break. Amongst the priciest of the places we checked out, Seawiches offers many vegetarian and even vegan options that you can’t find anywhere else in West End. If you’re craving tofu ( yes, people like myself actually crave it) then come here for the tofu burgers which are quite yummy. Appetizers run about $7 USD and the veggie burger with home cut potatoes runs about $10 USD.

3. The Roatan Chocolate Factory

This spot is no hidden gem, but it’s worth highlighting it for what it does offer. If you are looking for a quality coffee from ground beans then this is your spot. If you also want a dairy milk alternative then you can find that here too. While a cappuccino with almond milk ( charged extra) will be compatible to US prices ( $4.50) the large, freshly made chocolate chip cookies will steal the show at $2 USD. And if a $6 touristy chocolate bar is calling your name, then you can find that as well too….

4. Tijuana Tacos

Nearby to the chocolate shop you’ll find this small outdoor seating only Mexican style food stand. The host is super friendly ( and passionate) about his food. The best deal is the chicken tacos where you’ll get 3 double stuffed tortilla tacos for only $6 USD. The veggie tacos ( my favorite) were $8 USD and while they aren’t Mexican street food standard ( nothing beats it), they aren’t really yummy and worth the price.

5) Pura Vida

Marketed as a Costa Rican inspired restaurant, this spot was on the nicer end of our dinner options. The patio is right on the beach so it’s quite scenic. The best part is that the menu features 4 DIFFERENT vegetarian options- and none of them were pasta or salad. We chose 2 different dishes to split and were so PLEASANTLY SURPRISED with how tasteful they both were. Each dish was around $9 USD.

We hope these slightly more local sppts encourage you to try some new spots in Roatan!
