Are European countries really budget-friendly?

Our quick answer: it depends! Some countries in Western Europe are some of the most expensive in the world and are some of the most visited. Do we think they are ” worth it?” Yes, if you are strategic about where and how you use your money! Of course we think everyone should visit iconic cities like London, Paris, & Rome. But those cities can easily eat up the majority of your budget.

With careful accommodation choices in strategic areas of the city ( you actually never need to stay in the ” center” if a city has well-developed transportation!), access to a kitchen to cook a lot of your meals, and an open heart to use public transportation- then you’ll easy be able to explore some of these iconic destinations ( listen, they are well-visited for a reason).

We also love recommending less visited spots in “popular” countries like Ischia in Italy, Leeds in the UK, or Aux- en- Provence in France. Look out for more of our unique destination recommendations from our top Europe Budget Destinations.

And last but not least, do not be afraid to explore further east. Europe is made up of 44 unique countries, and around 20 of the countries are considered Eastern Europe. In general, everything we love about budget travel you can find much easier in an Eastern European country: cheaper accomodation, cheaper transportation, cheaper food options ( we cook much less here!), and way less crowds! For reference, we went to the capital cities of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in the middle of July and had a handfull of tourists with us on our most touristy activities ( i.e. free walking tours)…not to mention it was a comfortable 60-70 degrees in the middle of Western Europes heat wave.
