Our Favorite DIY Budget Chilean Winery Tour

Want to enjoy the iconic Chilean winery scene, but don’t want to spend your entire traveling budget on one outing? Us either! After some quick Googling, you’ll find hundreds ( maybe thousands?) of organized EXPENSIVE tours that will whisk you from either Santiago or Valparaíso– but not a lot of options on how to navigate it yourself. Follow our suggestions on how to create your own DIY budget Chilean winery tour by maximizing public transportation and minimizing what you spend.

Chilean Wine Regions

Luckily, the Casablana Chilean Wine Region is easily accessible from both Santiago and Valparaíso. The Casablanca Wine Region of Chile is known for its cool climate and outstanding Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir- this doesn’t mean much to us honestly, but we are always up for an adventure! If you ARE more knowledgeable about wine ( or just like learning more about it) then check out a description of the region here.

Anyway, back to your focus: Wine and saving money- is there a better combination?

Which wineries did we visit on our DIY budget Chilean winery tour?

First off, we visited 3 wineries , but the 2 we recommend in the Casablana Chilean wine region are:

  1. Bodegas RE
    • Address:F-850 1380, Casablanca, Valparaiso, Chile
    • Cost: CLP 25,000 ( about $26 USD) for a tour and 3 tastings ( with options to extend up to 7 tastings) or CLP 12,000 ( about $13 USD) for just the tour
  2. Casas del Bosque
    • Address: Camino La Canela, Casablanca.
    • Cost: CLP 12,000 (about $15 USD) for a tour and tasting.

If you’re looking for other nearby options in the Casablanca Chilean wine region, we also heard great things about Viña Emiliana ( about $12 for a guided tasting). Viña Emiliana is known to be the largest organic winery in the world and organizes a well known Chilean wine tour!

To be honest, we chose our wineries from Google recommendations because, again, we don’t know much about wine. What I can say is that we loved both of these experiences, enjoyed what we had, and think the landscapes themselves are worth a visit!

Getting to the Casablanca Chilean Wine Region

From Valparaíso

We were already in Valparaíso for a few days so we left from here. We think Valparaíso is a great addition to a Chilean budget itinerary for so many reasons. Valparaíso is known for it’s street art, funky buildings, and proximity to large sandy beach front areas. If you’re curious about how you could spend your time in Vale, check out some suggestions from Wordly Adventurer here.

1.Bus to Casablanca: Catch a bus from Valparaíso to Casablanca. Buses leave from Terminal de Buses Valparaíso, and the trip takes about 1 hour.

  • Cost: Approximately CLP 3,000–5,000 (around $4–6 USD).

*Note: The bus station in Valparaíso is right across from a market so it’s a great chance to pack up on last minute snacks ( including so much good fresh fruit!)

2.Getting to Wineries: Similar to the Santiago route, you can take a taxi from Casablanca to the wineries.

  • Taxi Cost: Roughly CLP 3,000–5,000 (about $4–6 USD).

From Santiago

If you’re looking for a bit of an escape from the city, then it’s possible to include a visit to the Casablanca Wine Region as a relaxing day trip. Luckily, there are several bus options that you can consider.

  1. Bus to Casablanca: Buses depart from the Terminal Alameda or Terminal San Borja. The journey takes about 1.5 hours.
    • Cost: Approximately CLP 5,000–7,000 (around $6–9 USD).
  2. From Casablanca to Wineries: Once in Casablanca, you can walk or take a short taxi ride to nearby wineries. Most are within 15 minutes by taxi.

Winery Tour Options

Listen, we get it. Taking busses and navigating taxis isn’t fun ( or easy) all the time. If you’re looking for a bit of a splurge and want to make sure everything is all organized for you, then there are LOADS of organized tours.

Santiago Wine Tours:

-This full day tour leaves from Santiago and includes not only stops in the Casablanca winery region, but also stops in Valparaíso AND Viña del Mar. Beach, wine, and art- it’s pricey, but it’s a solid combo!

-This haf day tour includes transportation from Santiago to Concha y Toro Vineyard, which is another popular option.

Valparaíso Wine Tours

-This full day tour ironically covers transportation and entrance to the exact same wineries we visited to.

-This half day tour includes private transportation and a winery visit and tasting

Tips for a successful DIY budget Chilean winery tour:

Plan around the bus schedules: The bus from Valparaíso runs hourly, so frequently enough to use, but not so frequently enough to not have a plan!

Call ahead ( for weekends): We didn’t make any reservations ahead of time ( I did call RE to see if we needed a reservation since someone suggested that to me, but was told mid-week we would be okay).

Split a tasting: No, this plan isn’t for everyone. But as Pat isn’t much of a wine guy, we normally will just share. More wine for me, and less money spent. Win-Win.

Keep your taxi:If you like the taxi driver you’re with, it’s helpful to just ask if they will wait for you for a bit more money. We had one driver who was a HOOT so we asked him to hang around for us and he did! If not, all of the wineries can help organize a taxi too.

Bring snacks: We aren’t experts, but we think wine is always best enjoyed with a nice snack! At Bodegas RE, the tasting included a cheese sampling which is really nice. Though other wineries offer snack/meal packages, we didn’t want to spend more money then we needed to.

We loved our outing in the Casablanca region and were so happy that we were able to piece a tour together on our own ( and extra happy we saved over $250 bucks by doing it this way). After hiking part of the W Trek in Patagonia, it was great to be able to spoil ourselves with a little budget-friendly outing! We hope you find these options helpful for creating your own DIY budget Chilean winery tour!
